Frequently Asked Questions

  • JM Chem is a student-built platform that creates course-specific STEM resources for real college classes. Each course is developed by students who’ve mastered the material and understand how it’s actually taught and tested. Our goal is to make STEM clearer, more fun and approachable, and less intimidating—without dumbing it down.

  • Strong students who have done well in the course, enjoy explaining concepts, and care about clarity over shortcuts. Prior tutoring or teaching experience is a plus, but not required. Graduate student instructors of the course are also welcome to join the team!

  • As a JM Chem course creator, you will:

    • Develop high-quality, course-specific content (short videos, note guides, etc.) aligned with how the material is taught and assessed at your university (e.g., exams, problem sets, pacing).

    • Explain concepts clearly and thoughtfully, with an emphasis on intuition, common pitfalls, and strategies that help students actually understand the material.

    • Organize content in a clear, structured way so it’s easy for students to navigate and use throughout the semester.

    • Collaborate with the JM Chem team through periodic check-ins and feedback to maintain clarity, consistency, and quality across courses.

    • Take ownership of your course, including refining content over time and helping share the resource with students at your university.

    • Act as a point person for your course, using your firsthand experience to ensure the material stays accurate, relevant, and helpful.

  • Start by reaching out through the contact form or email listed on this page. We’ll set up a short conversation to learn about your course, your background, and your interest in teaching. If it’s a good fit, we’ll work with you to scope out the content and get you started.

  • Nope! We give student content creators plenty of freedom to present material in the way that best suits their course. At the same time, we provide clear guidelines around structure, scope, and clarity to ensure content stays consistent and high-quality across JM Chem. Within that framework, you’ll have flexibility in how you explain concepts and what you emphasize — because you know your course best.

  • Compensation is based on revenue share, meaning you earn a percentage of the revenue generated by the course materials you build. The exact split depends on the scope of the content and your level of involvement, with a minimum of 60% and maximum of 90% going to you – and we’re transparent about this from the start. As your course grows, your earnings grow with it.

  • Collaborative, supportive, and low-ego. JM Chem is built by people who genuinely care about teaching, building clarity for others, and keeping things light and fun. You’ll have guidance when you want it, autonomy when you don’t, and direct communication throughout the process.

  • This is a high-autonomy role designed for motivated, self-directed students. You’ll have check-ins, feedback, and clear expectations, but you won’t be micromanaged. We trust contributors to take ownership of their courses and reach out when they need support.

  • Yes, if you have the time and interest. We’d recommend starting with one course and expand once you’re comfortable with the process.

  • Absolutely. Some courses are best built collaboratively, and we’re open to small teams or partnerships as long as roles and responsibilities are clearly defined.

  • Time commitment is flexible and varies by course. We built our original course content in one summer alongside full-time jobs, but pacing and level of engagement is up to you.

  • Your title would be something like JM Chem Course Creator or [Insert Course Here] Course Lead (we’re happy to tailor this). We want to provide a title that can be listed as a leadership or teaching experience on resumes and applications.

  • Absolutely. This role is great teaching, mentorship, curriculum development, or educational leadership experience!

  • Nope! As long as you’ve taken and mastered the course you’re building content for, we’re interested—regardless of school or major. STEM courses are prioritized, but we are open!

  • You can reach us via the contact form on this site or by emailing jmchem215@gmail.com. We’re happy to answer questions, talk through ideas, or just get to know you.
